Keagan's Birth - Dec. 27th

Thank you so much to family and friends for all their support, encouragement, and love. Many of you have heard bits and pieces of our story but we wanted to put them all together for you.

Warning: This is not the Readers Digest Short and Condensed Version

Kasie had been hospitalized right before Thanksgiving after getting quite sick. Dr.'s said that she had an infection but they couldn't localize it. Thankfully she responded to antibiotics and was able to go home after a few days. Life returned back to normal with two kids, teaching, and a loving husband.

I had a wonderful Christmas with our immediate family Christmas morning before heading to Kelly's family for the rest of the holiday. That night I got quite sick, throwing up constantly, running fever, and having contractions. Kelly bundled me up in the middle of the night and we drove through the snow and ice to Labor and Delivery.

My OB quickly determined that my fever was high and my white blood cell count was through the roof. She put me on multiple high dose antibiotics and we played the wait and see game for a day. After I failed to respond to the antibiotics an emergency c-section was scheduled.

The surgery was done in a full OR with my OB, a general surgeon, and an infectious disease specialist. To distract myself I counted people, NOT a good idea. At 20 people I stopped counting. Kelly was not able to come in since they were putting me completely out but God gave me a peace in the OR that could only come from him.

During surgery they had to create a vertical incision that had to be extra long so they could remove all surrounding organs, take them out, look for infection, and palpate them. They then stuck them back in and stapled me up. The last time I saw that many staples was at Office Depot!

Thanks to a miracle, Keagan Joseph was born at 33 weeks weighing a whopping 5 lbs 9 oz. (To give you some perspective, Kyla was born at 38 weeks at 6 lbs). He has shown NO signs of infection. He started out on C-PAP, a feeding tube, and IV. We are hoping and praying that he can come home before his due date of Feb. 12th.
